Jeez what a year this has been, wasn't sure I would make it this far. This class was the one that really made my senior year special. I made and rekindled quite a few friendships that I plan on keeping in touch with throughout college and on. It is so wonderful to have a group that is also as invested in art as I want to be. The class was also an incredible support system. There were many times many of us didn't know what to do or honestly wanted to die, but everyone here was so supportive and willing to take time and help you with your projects. I know some of my pieces wouldn't be what they are without the help of some from the class. Also through this class, I was able to converse with people with similar interests, also wanting to go to college for art. I heard and explored schools I never had even heard of. Being in a class where people have similar goals really helps you create an idea for your future. Its a solid support system of people considering the same schools, majors and careers as you, and really made an impact on my decisions for college. I am excited to go into college for Illustration, and hope to do concept art, animation, 3D modeling, and product design. I know there are many things out there I don't even know about, but am excited to find a place for me. As for the art portion of it, I really loved having an all year art class. I was able to do and try new things that never would have been possible with just one semester. I was able to use oil paint for the first time, as well as refine some of my skills in PrismaColor. I found new processes I liked and was able to apply those to my future pieces. I was able to watch my art develop and discover new things I liked to do, such as landscapes. When it came to the concentration, that was rough for me. I had several ideas, none of which really sparked my interest. I didn't feel I could make 12 whole pieces out of it. Even when I thought I had settled on an idea, I just couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't right. However I talked to Mrs. Rossi, and she was very supportive and even though we were two weeks in, she let me switch it again. That was the best decision I could have made, and I felt an immediate pressure release. I watch my style grow and develop through the pieces. It was also so rewarding at the end, getting dressed up with my favourite gals and having our very own art show! It was a spectacular night, and very fun. I loved watching all of my friends explain their pieces to interested people and even sell some of them! The sense of accomplishment was undeniable.
I really hope future students get as much out of this class that I did, I know I will be dropping by in the coming years to see! In this final piece, we have all the characters in one frame. I tried to incorporate a bit of finality into the piece.
After Shego and Kida's disagreeing views in the last piece, I wanted to make sure that all ended well. Perhaps they are hugging after that moment, or perhaps it is goodbye. Who knows how long until they see each other again? Sharkboy and Lavagirl have both turned their chairs and are slightly leaning on the bar, indicating that they are settled and comfortable in their spots and with one another. We can see that Sharkboy is holding one of the drinks Jim made in the previous photo, and that it is the one that resembles Lavagirl. Jim is in the back, still making drinks for unseen customers, as a bartenders job is never really over. And Danny being the last addition, seems to be looking at the time. I tried to give him a sense of superiority, making his leather jacket look more like a vest and adding a watch. It's slight, but I hoped to give off the sense of a manager, or someone who was in charge. Perhaps it is around time of closing? We won't ever know. But here is where the it ends, and I hope everyone at this point has an idea of what the characters relationships are, and has an idea of what it would have looked like had there been another frame. He's gonna catch them all 'cause he's Danny Phantom
The last character I wanted to throw into my brigade was none other than Danny Phantom. The show was one of my top favourites as a kid, and without seeing an episode in over a decade, I still know the entire theme song. This one was a bit tricky because of his split persona. In one world, he is just an average kid, regular T-Shirt and jeans with black hair and blue eyes. In another world, he's in all black with glowing green eyes, white hair and a phantom body that possesses incredible powers. I wanted to create a version of him where it stuck to my idea of realistic young adult, but you could still tell it was him based on the style and silhouette. I tried to base the hairstyle off what I imaged would have been a split between the two, without doing half black, half white, or frosted tips. I think the gradient was subtle but necassary. I also did some tricks in his clothes, where I hid the Danny Phantom symbol on his pocket underneath his jacket. I also gave him shoes that reflected his powers. They seem to glow and pulse green, which is his Phantom color. The silhouette idea took a bit to come up with. Originally I was going to use his transforming image, but then I remembered that I didn't use any supernatural powers in any other piece, and I wanted them to be more realistic. So I then decided that his shadow would be his other half, reflecting the green eyes. It was really awesome to see everyone recognize this character and get excited over this different look. So now there is a lot happening in this piece.
Lets take it from the beginning. In the front is Kida and Shego, Kida seemingly shocked or surpised at something that Shego finds very humorous. I really like the way I was able to capture this moment between them, since it is such a reflection of their personalities. It is very easy to see that what Kida finds offensive that Shego finds funny, as it is in their nature of Hero/Villian. Next is the back, with Jim, Lavagirl and the new arrival of Sharkboy. I imagined that Lavagirl was either waiting for him or perhaps they just met. Perhaps Sharkboy is offering to buy her a drink or maybe they are just talking. As for Jim, I wanted him to be doing something actually bartender-ish. So why not mix drinks? I figured since Sharkboy and Lavagirl are right there, perhaps they will order themed drinks, or maybe Jim just was inspired. I like how I don't really have a set idea on what is going on in each of my pieces, allowing for each and every person to create a different story in their head as the images progress. This piece was less of a challenge for me, as are the ones after this. Coming this far, I had more of an idea of what I wanted to do. Originally, they were all supposed to gather around the table and slowly join together, like friends meeting up from seperate places, or in this case seperate universes.
But as I progressed in my concentration I realized that I wanted something more dynamic than having 6 characters sit at table, and so from there I decided to tell a different story for each character. They didn't have to all know each other, just being in the same location gives it all a sense of community. This piece was just to introduce Lavagirl. Nothing special, and you don't see her face or outfit yet, but thats all right, as she will emerge more in time. It also provides a unique interaction between Jim the Bartender and her. There is a background story going on between them two and another story entirely in the foreground with Kida and Shego. I feel in this one my style has progressed significantly, and I am more comfortable with the faces and body movements. I feel from this piece on, you can really see the difference from the first half to the last half. Here is Sharkboy and Lavagirl! My fav duo from my childhood!
I finished this piece about a month ago and I really like it. I'm mostly proud of how her leggings turned out, ngl, that small part took about 2 hours for me to figure out. I have never (successfully) drawn fire before so I really like how they turned out! And for Sharkboy's shirt, it originally said "Bite Me" but I had to turn it into a board of art people so I opted for a different route. These two pieces where very fun for me to do, and I had so much fun trying to incorporate their names and styles into their designs. I realized with lavagirls piece that I was starting to shade a bit different. I really love how the shading on her leggings turned out, since I was a bit concerened with how it would look since there was so much going on. I also gave them both tattoos that I thought represented parts of them. For my concentration, I decided to do something near and dear to my heart. I would redraw characters from my childhood and redesign their entire style and put them in a dynamic pose. Then I was going to put them in a general place to meet, as if different parts from my childhood were meeting. I choose a restaurant because I work at one and generally enjoy the atmosphere, and also it is a prime place to gather a large group.
This is the first of 12 pieces, which will be 6 redrawn characters and 6 merging them into a group image. Lets start with the girls. I wanted them to seem like great friends. I had them move closer to each other, kind of meet in the middle. Also I thought since Kida is from a more primal state that she might sit a bit different, more crouched or folded. Honestly I used the way I sit as a sort of example. Also in these days people often show each other things on their phones, photos of traveling or funny videos, or maybe they are taking a photo! I thought that all these options can create a personal idea in the viewers mind, and that's a fun idea to me. While I was drawing, I had the idea that perhaps everyone has a place in the restuarant, you know? Like they are sitting, chatting, dining. Jim could be a bartender. There are servers and managers. I got the idea that everyone could know each other but also have a position. Maybe two will be on a date. I thought it was a better idea to have them each doing their own thing to make the person wonder what they are doing, or see what their night is like. Maybe the bar is really busy, and maybe the place is loud, so the girls have to sit next to each other. I figured this was a lot more interesting them placing them all at a table, so I went with the idea. I made Jim the bartender because honestly I thought his outfit and personality was fitting for the position! It takes a special person to be a good bartender. Plus he seems like the kind of guy that can make a mean drink.
Ahhh I had so much fun with this piece. Jim is one of my favourite characters, and he has such a great story. He is the main character from the movie Treasure Planet. What I love his life throws so much crap at him, but at the end he really blossoms into a new person. I wanted to display who he was at the end of the movie, opposed to showing his insecure unsure self in the beginning. At the end, the police show up at his mothers door with Jim, which was a common phenomenon when he was reckless. This time, to his mothers surprise, they present him as a captain or established man of sorts. I wanted to take that idea that he turned into possibly a captain but still have some style from his pirating days. Each part of this piece is significant. The little pink guy in Jimbo's hand was a little buddy to him and the main antagonist. He was also the comedic character of the movie and often caused some problems. In his lower hand he is holding the actual treasure map, which was the focal point of the movie. It's almost funny that I included both of them because at one point Morph uses his powers to turn into the map and trick everyone. The moon is his simple background, but opposed to the others, the moon has meaning. His home is on a sort of crescent moon that has been built. It has many buildings and ports on it which add weird shapes along the inside. It's very simple but it represents something important to him, especially since that's what he was trying to get back too. I really enjoyed doing this one, especially since he was the first guy of the set.
For this piece it was the first time I had to add a character walking into a scene. At first, I had added her in the other booth to the left (you can see in the sketch below). My idea was that they seemed to recognize each other and start talking, then Kida would join Shego at the table next round. I really wasn't feeling it, and actually didn't like the way it looked at all, but I was going to leave it that way. When I showed it to Mrs. Rossi, she reminded me that because outfits are such a focal point of my concentration I should focus more on Kida and her design than how they meet. Plus having her walk in the frame would add more interaction. Looking back, it didn't make sense for Shego to sit along looking for someone when they were a booth over, so I'm glad that I was told to switch it up. It took a bit more time but was worth it. I'm thinking about adding drinks that represent the characters as they come in. I'm not sure, but it's an idea. Also I make minor changes to the background, such as bottles moving or missing to represent they are being used, or chairs moved slightly because people have been there. |
