For my concentration, I decided to do something near and dear to my heart. I would redraw characters from my childhood and redesign their entire style and put them in a dynamic pose. Then I was going to put them in a general place to meet, as if different parts from my childhood were meeting. I choose a restaurant because I work at one and generally enjoy the atmosphere, and also it is a prime place to gather a large group.
This is the first of 12 pieces, which will be 6 redrawn characters and 6 merging them into a group image.
Ahhh I had so much fun with this piece. Jim is one of my favourite characters, and he has such a great story. He is the main character from the movie Treasure Planet. What I love his life throws so much crap at him, but at the end he really blossoms into a new person. I wanted to display who he was at the end of the movie, opposed to showing his insecure unsure self in the beginning. At the end, the police show up at his mothers door with Jim, which was a common phenomenon when he was reckless. This time, to his mothers surprise, they present him as a captain or established man of sorts.
I wanted to take that idea that he turned into possibly a captain but still have some style from his pirating days. Each part of this piece is significant. The little pink guy in Jimbo's hand was a little buddy to him and the main antagonist. He was also the comedic character of the movie and often caused some problems. In his lower hand he is holding the actual treasure map, which was the focal point of the movie. It's almost funny that I included both of them because at one point Morph uses his powers to turn into the map and trick everyone. The moon is his simple background, but opposed to the others, the moon has meaning. His home is on a sort of crescent moon that has been built. It has many buildings and ports on it which add weird shapes along the inside. It's very simple but it represents something important to him, especially since that's what he was trying to get back too.
I really enjoyed doing this one, especially since he was the first guy of the set.
